Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment directly related to an F-1 student’s major. Eligible students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization both before (pre-completion) and after (post-completion) finishing their academic studies. However, any time spent in pre-completion OPT will reduce the amount of post-completion OPT available. Off-campus employment requires authorization.

  • Pre-completion OPT: You can apply for pre-completion OPT after being enrolled full-time for one academic year at a college, university, conservatory, or seminary certified by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to enroll F-1 students.

  • Post-completion OPT: You can apply for post-completion OPT after completing your studies. Once authorized, you must work at least part-time (20 hours per week) or full-time.

If you plan to apply for a nonimmigrant worker visa (H1B) at the end of your OPT, it is advisable not to use Pre-Completion OPT during your studies. Utilizing Pre-Completion OPT may reduce the amount of time you can work in the United States after graduation while awaiting approval for your nonimmigrant worker visa.
