Yes, it is possible to change your status from a tourist visa (B-1/B-2) to a student visa (F-1) while in the United States. Apply for the change of status well before your tourist visa expires. It is crucial to maintain lawful status throughout the process. Please check your I94 record, you can find your tourist visa expiration date. It is usually 6 months from the last date of entry. 

It is appropriate to file the change of status application after 90 days of entry to the US. Please note that stay in valid B-1/B-2 status while your application is being processed. Do not start attending classes until your change of status to F-1 is approved.
